Wear of the Week: Boom + Leather Vest

Image

Although we live close to the coast in a laid back Southern California town, I frequently like to channel an urban vibe for my ensemble.  There is something uber chic about wearing all black, accenting with leather, and accessorizing with bold accessories and sequins.  It makes me feel I am in the bustling streets of NYC instead of 20 yards from the ocean in a quaint downtown.

Image

This is exactly what I was going for in the final Wear of the Week look.  I layered the Boom sweatshirt with a vegan leather vest (one of the most versatile pieces I have in my closet for fall), red pants (they’re ba-a-a-ck), black leather boots and oversized hoop earrings.

Am I in Malibu or Manhattan?  You would never know.

Wear of the Week: Boom + Pencil Skirt

Image

Just as superheroes morph from everyday citizen to strength yielding lifesavers, the Boom sweatshirt can morph from comfy running-errand-casual to sophisticated yet flirty work attire.

Paired with a sleek pencil skirt adds an element of elegance and contrasts the quirkiness of the sweatshirt.

Add a high bun, heels, and a sparkle clutch and this superhero starts to take on a persona of its own!

“I believe there’s a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride, even though sometimes we have to be steady, and give up the thing we want the most. Even our dreams.” – Spider-Man 2

We all love a good superhero movie.  The unique characters, suspenseful situations, and a place where good almost always overpowers evil give us hope.  Hope that there is good in the world, and not only that, but that there are those who make doing good in the world their full time job and put that above everything else.

Deep inside each of us, there is this hero.  It is important that we listen to it and nurture it but it often gets buried with the white noise of every day life.

This hero can be demonstrated in many ways.  It could be the example of what a parent sacrifices for the better of their children.  It could be the successful executive who realizes his true calling is to a life of service.  Or it could be as simple as the person who routinely picks up trash on his evening beach walks, making the coastline cleaner for the rest of us.

However you decide to be a hero is significant, as those are the things that make life a little sweeter every day.

Serious inner hero aside, a fun and overt way to display our superhero fascination is with this Phillip Lim for Target Boom! sweatshirt.  Playful and colorful, it is an easy throw on with skinny jeans and flats.  I love it with leopard smoking slippers for an unexpected pairing.

Fun + flirty + affordable = my favorite combination!

Yesterday the 3.1 Phillip Lim collection for Target launched.  Known for his menswear inspired pieces and classic cuts in bold prints and colors, the Phillip Lim collaboration was a highly anticipated event.  And fortunately, I was able to score an item I had my eye on before everything vanished.

Stay tuned to see which piece I came home with and how I will be styling it three different ways this week.

I would love to know what pieces you purchased from the collection!

Wear of the Week: Work to Happy Hour Booties + Shorts

K.I.S.S.

Keep It Simple, Stupid.

This is a mantra I learned in my broadcast journalism courses and I find that it can apply to a lot of things in life.  Sometimes I find myself repeating this as I stand agonizingly in front of my closet with “nothing to wear.”  I know darn well that I do, in fact, have a lot of things to wear.  It’s just that nothing is speaking to me.

I channeled the KISS method as I picked out the final outfit for this week’s Wear of the Week.  I paired a white button-up (a staple every woman should have in her closet) with a black cardigan and boyfriend shorts.  Super simple.  I used accessories to express the personality of the outfit, like this amazing floral bib necklace I recently purchased at the J. Crew outlet store.

This outfit works great for Happy Hour with friends, and if you are coming straight from work, swap out the shorts for black pants (or even better, pants with a pop of color like burgundy).  Paired with a sparkle clutch, this “simple” outfit starts to have a life of it’s own.

Wear of the Week: Booties + Skinny Jeans

Image

The cool weather continues- and so does my love for fall fashion!  For today’s look, I paired booties with skinny jeans.
This partnership is reminiscent of the relationship between gouda cheese and an apple slice, kindergarten best friends, or Kesha and an 808 drum.  They just fit together and make a sensible combination.

ImageImage

I half-tucked a floral tunic to create shape and paired it all together with a moto jacket I picked up from Zara while on a trip to San Francisco.  It was patiently waiting in my closet since June and I was so excited to put it to use. Image

Along with a side pony, this is casual comfort at its finest!

Wear of the Week: Booties + Skirt

Image

Guess what arrived yesterday… fall!  And it came with a roar.   The sun didn’t make an appearance all day, the wind blew nonstop, and the thermostat didn’t inch above 63 degrees.  I know this is only temporary, as I am sure there are many warm days ahead, but I will embrace it while it is here.

During these transitional weeks, I tend to gravitate toward clothes in darker colors that can be dressed for warm or cool weather alike, such as this black and cream floral skirt.  I initially thought today’s post would highlight this outfit as a warm weather ensemble, but once I noticed the brisk air outdoors, I added tights to make it more fall-weather appropriate.  Tights, scarves, and hats can all be quick but efficient add-ons to an outfit when an unexpected chill arrives.

Image

Paired with the always-versatile chambray shirt and black booties, this outfit celebrates fall while recognizing that summer isn’t far behind.  I contrasted the hippie-fringe booties by adding a preppy vibe with the chambray shirt buttoned to the very top.  The black bib necklace ties the look together and I wore a cocktail ring passed down from my grandma for a bit of flair.
